Smell Faint. 
Gills Deep purple/lilac when young fading to pale brown/tan. Widely spaced, broad and irregular with shorter gills in-between. 
Spore Print White. Globose with spines. 
Stem Deep purple/lilac when young fading to pale brown/tan. Fibrous, not often growing straight and sometimes hollow. 
Cap Convex to flattened with depressed centre and even upturned edges. Deep purple/lilac when young fading to pale brown/tan. 
Flesh Purple can be white with a purple flush. 
Habitat Mixed woodland, particularly with oak and beech. 
Taste Mildly nutty/mushroomy, keeps its colour when cooked so a colouful addition to any meal. 
Possible Confusion When young the deep purple of this mushroom is quite distinctive but caution should be taken with older specimens. Looks a little like Inocybe geophylla var. lilacina but this musroom
