Smell Faint. 
Gills Does not have gills but the underside is normaly smoother than the top and can be paler brown. 
Spore Print White. Long and sausage shaped. 
Stem Can have a slight thread-like stem. 
Cap The fruiting body is ear-shaped, smooth or undulating and is tan, red/brown in colour. 
Flesh Tan, red/brown. Cartilaginous and jelly like. 
Habitat Mainly growing on dead or living elder in large numbers but can be found on other wood. 
Taste Not strong but good if used in Chinese cooking or dried, ground to a powder and used as stock. Must be cooked well before consumption. 
Possible Confusion As long as you only collect these from elder trees they can only be Wood Ears.
